Insights
Where your firm's hours and money actually went: across the whole practice, per client, and per person, over a period you choose.
Insights is the read-back. Everything on it is built from what your firm has already recorded — the hours people logged and the invoices you raised — so it is a view of your own data rather than a separate thing to maintain.
Choosing the period
Time range sets what everything below is measured over: This year, Last 12 months, or All time.
Last-12-months is usually the more useful of the two shorter ones. A calendar year in January is four weeks of evidence and tells you very little.
The three cuts
- Overview — the whole firm. Hours recorded, what they were worth, and what you invoiced.
- Clients — the same numbers per client, which is where the uncomfortable ones live. A client you like is not necessarily a client who pays for the time they take.
- Team — per person, so it is visible where the work actually sits rather than where you assume it sits.
Reading it honestly
Insights can only see what was written down. A week nobody logged is a week that looks free, and a client whose hours went unrecorded will look more profitable than they are — which is the failure mode worth knowing about, because it makes the worst clients look like the best ones.
Where a figure mixes rated and unrated time it is marked Estimated rather than presented as exact.
Insights is limited by what your role allows. A firm where everybody can see everybody's hours is a choice, not the default — see owners and members.
